Afrogeek returns with a bang in Soweto

Afrogeek Festival made its much-anticipated return this past weekend on 24 May 2025, bringing life, colour, and culture to the heart of Soweto. From gamers and geeks to creators and casual fans, the community came out in full force and the vibe was nothing short of amazing.

Afrogeek is more than just an event; it’s a vibrant celebration of geek culture, music, gaming, animation, and indie comics, all rooted in African creativity. This year’s festival created the perfect blend of nostalgia, future-thinking, and community, proving that the local scene is alive and thriving.

The festival featured a strong line-up of studios and creatives, including Disputed People Games, Black Native Studios, Chocolate Tribe, and Kasi Esports, among many others. Local artists, illustrators, and game developers got to showcase their talent through original games, animations, and handcrafted merchandise — turning the venue into a lively hub of African excellence.

As part of the festivities, Disputed Pods launched Season 2 of “Podcast on Tour”, capturing behind-the-scenes moments and live conversations with festival guests and organisers. We had the privilege of chatting with industry leaders like Chocolate Tribe, Afrogeek organiser Neo, and the team at Kasi Esports. From the importance of storytelling in animation to grassroots esports development in townships, the interviews offered powerful insights into the growth of African digital arts and gaming.

We also got to showcase our own titles- RECLAIM, Hyper Star Fury, and Explosive Fingers. Attendees were able to download Hyper Star Fury on their mobile devices, test their reflexes in Explosive Fingers, and step into the serene, post-climate world of Reclaim. The feedback? Honest, exciting, and full of love for local creations.

Afrogeek 2025 was more than a festival — it was a reminder of the power of collaboration, culture, and community. It showed us just how important it is to support and grow the spaces that represent us as South Africans, especially in the creative and tech world.

If this weekend proved anything, it’s that geek culture is alive in the township and it’s proudly African.
