Introducing AMANZI: A game by Academy of Digital Art Alumni Game Development Students

“Water is always in balance. Balance is life. When things go out of balance, tragedy follows”.  This powerful message sets the tone for Amanzi, a newly announced stealth-action adventure game developed by alumni of the Academy of Digital Arts in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 2024, the Academy launched its very first Game Production Incubator Programme, a ground breaking initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of local game developers. Out of this programme emerged Amanzi — a game that doesn’t just entertain, but tells a deeply relevant story inspired by African environments and social dynamics.

Set in the city of Amanzi, players explore a world divided. One district, Amafu, flourishes with clean water and resources, while its counterpart, Luthuli, struggles with daily survival due to extreme water scarcity. Through a richly designed African-inspired world, players uncover the underlying reasons behind this imbalance, navigating a tense narrative that mirrors real-world challenges.

Amanzi is a first-person, stealth-based action-adventure packed with immersive features — from hacking and puzzle-solving to enemy encounters across varied, beautifully crafted environments. The game also boasts exceptional audio design, thanks to the Cape Town-based audio house Pressure Cooker Studios, elevating the overall experience with a vivid and atmospheric soundscape.

With its authentic African storytelling, relevant themes, and fresh gameplay approach, Amanzi is a shining example of what’s possible when local talent is nurtured and empowered.

The early access version is available to play on itch.io- https://loud-rabbits.itch.io/amanzi
